Don't Let Your Brain Trick You
Something I’ve been mulling over a lot these past weeks is just how tricky our brain is and how it can keep us from doing what we KNOW we need to do.
I want to unpack some common thoughts I hear from people that keeps them from moving forward in their metabolic health.
The first one I hear all the time is “i am doing EVERYTHING right, what am I missing??” I talk to people every day who say this only to get on a coaching call with me and they aren’t eating enough calories, protein, or carbs!!
When it comes to nourishment it’s honestly so easy to miss the mark. I feel like so many of us believe we are eating enough calories, when the reality is we are still chronically undernourished. Undernourishment keeps us in a constant state of fight or flight and suppresses our thyroid function. But so often, we think we’re getting enough and that’s just not the reality.
Listen, I talk about this every freaking day. I am constantly educating on the importance of eating enough calories, balancing your blood sugar, focusing on minerals, and I STILL miss the mark some times. So if I, who literally makes a living telling people to eat more food, can miss the mark and not meet my energy demands, you can too.
It’s really important in this journey toward metabolic wellness to be as open and honest with yourself as possible.
Our brain is tricky and likes to make us think we are doing all the things. I would even venture out far enough to say it keeps us in a perpetual victim mentality. That mindset that says: I will never get better, I’m the exception, this won’t work for me, i’ve done everything.
That victim mindset really keeps us from being able to take a step back and just get honest.
Honesty is telling the truth about reality. Giving someone the ability to make an accurate decision based on reality. When we are honest with people, they are able to make a decision based on reality instead of a false reality. The same holds true for ourselves – when we perpetuate a belief, a thought, based on a false reality, we will continue to make distorted decisions.
Sometimes the answer to our problems really is so simple, like eating more calories, getting more carbs, or upping protein intake. But our brains like to trick us into thinking it’s going to be harder than that. That we’re maybe already doing all those things, when the truth, the reality might be – we’re not.
So get honest with yourself. No shame. No anything. Don’t be weird. Just give yourself the ability to make a good decision based on reality.
Then start nourishing yourself.
Another tricky concept that I think our brain likes to trick us into believing is “i’m too far gone”
And if that’s not the biggest load of bull crap i’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is.
That’s just not true. Your healing journey may take a little longer than someone who say, grew up on a farm and ate only the purest foods of the earth, who’s lips have never tasted fluoride, and who’s arms have never been pricked by a poke. But give yourself grace. You were making the best decision you know how with the information that you had. Don’t let you brain trick you into thinking you are too far gone. That your desire to have balanced hormones, normal cycles, or KIDS is too far gone. It’s not.
These are just two of the most common thoughts I hear from people. “I’m doing everything right” and “im too far gone”. And the reason I wanted to address them in this podcast is because our thoughts drive our actions. You’ve probably heard the saying “whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” That holds true here. Sometimes the biggest thing that’s stopping you from experiencing leaps and bounds in your wellness you so desperately desire… Is you.
Which is honestly the most FREEING thing, if you think about it. When you realize it’s absolutely no one else’s responsibility. That you are not a slave to your circumstances. You’re not a slave to what someone has told you. You are not a slave to how you grew up. You’re not a slave to what was done to you. You CAN CHOOSE to either stay in your current circumstances or you can choose to make a move. Either way, it’s your CHOICE. Don’t let you’re brain trick you into thinking you’re stuck – you’re not.
You’ll probably hear me say this a lot on this show, but I want you to get to a place where you can be in a constant state of curiosity. Curiosity is a really tender place to stand. To ask “why do I think this” “why do I feel this” “Why are things this way” “what needs to change”. Shame speaks in absolutes. It tells you “i’m doing ALL the right things” “I will NEVER get better” “this CAN’T work”. There’s no room for shame at this table. Shame is not of the Lord – so it’s gotta go.
I wanted to talk about these mindsets today because I believe it to be really foundational when it comes to healing your hormones and restoring your metabolism, youth, and vitality. I can give you all the science, all the checklists, all the things that you should do, but if you don’t get a hold of your thoughts FIRST (and for my believer friends listening – this is bible – when paul says to take EVERY thought captive) you’ll never get your desired results.
Before you start making these changes in your hormonal health, I want to check in with yourself, get honest and take inventory of the thoughts that like to make a home in your head. Take radical responsibility. Then nourish yourself. You’ve got this.
