Waking Up at Night to Pee? How Nourishment Can Help

Are you waking up at night to pee, sometimes multiple times, and wondering why you can't seem to get a full night's sleep?

Night waking is actually a symptom of hormonal imbalance, ie an under functioning thyroid and sluggish liver.

Your body relies on adequate nourishment to support essential functions, including energy production, blood sugar regulation, and hormone production. When you're consistently undernourished or not eating enough to meet your body's needs, it is worth taking a closer look at how you're fueling yourself.

What Causes You to Wake Up at Night to Pee?

Your body works around the clock to maintain stable blood glucose levels and provide your cells with the energy they need. Your liver plays an important role in this process by storing glucose as glycogen and releasing it when your body needs it.

If your body has not taken in enough nourishment and you have not consumed enough glucose (carbs), then around 1-3 in the morning (this is the time in Traditional Chinese Medicine that the liver is recognized as most active) your liver will begin the process of breaking down glycogen to produce enough glucose to keep you asleep. This process triggers a stress response where your adrenal glands will produce adrenaline and cortisol (good, wakeful hormones - in the right context) to help the liver break down the glycogen into an active, useable form.

The Connection Between Nourishment, Metabolism, and Sleep

Your body needs adequate energy and nutrients to carry out its daily functions. Consistently eating too little can make it harder to meet those needs.

Carbohydrates are one source of energy for your body. When you eat carbs, your body can use glucose for energy or store some of it as glycogen for later use. Your liver helps maintain blood glucose levels between meals and overnight.

Stress hormones also play a role in regulating energy availability. Cortisol and adrenaline help your body respond to changing demands, including maintaining blood glucose.

Because these systems work together, supporting your body with adequate nourishment is an important part of caring for your overall health.

Start by looking at the bigger picture. Are you eating enough throughout the day to meet your body’s energy needs? Are you getting the nutrients your body needs? Are you giving yourself adequate time to rest and recover?

These are worthwhile questions to explore as part of a holistic approach to health.

My Experience With Nighttime Urination During Pregnancy

Believe me, if you're struggling with nighttime waking, I've been there.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I woke up six to eight times a night to pee. I chalked it up to pregnancy and increased blood flow. But really, I was undernourished.

During my second pregnancy, my experience was completely different.

I slept so well, even at nine months pregnant with a giant baby inside me! I wasn't waking up repeatedly throughout the night to use the bathroom.

Experiencing such a dramatic difference between my two pregnancies made me more curious about the many factors that influence how we feel, function, and sleep.

How to Start Supporting Your Metabolic Health

If you're waking up at night to pee and want to support your overall health, start by paying attention to your body's needs.

Here are a few places to begin:

  • Prioritize adequate nourishment. Make sure you're eating enough food to support your daily energy needs rather than consistently restricting your intake.

  • Include carbohydrates in a balanced diet. Carbs provide energy and help replenish glycogen stores. Your individual needs will depend on your circumstances and overall health.

  • Look at the bigger picture. Consider your energy levels, sleep quality, eating patterns, and other symptoms rather than viewing nighttime waking in isolation.
